Wilderness Travel Expediting
Northwest Territories and Nunavut

Bathurst Arctic Services functions as a wilderness travel service. We can arrange any wilderness trip, anywhere in the North, and can save you a significant amount of money in doing so. With one phone call, you can reduce the hassle of organizing a trip, and can increase your own confidence in the safety of the trip.

Boyd Warner, the principal operator of Bathurst Arctic Services, has lived all his life in the North, and has spent much time flying, boating, hunting, and walking over the land and waters of the North. As a commercial pilot with much bush flying experience, he has extensive knowledge on the capabilities of a variety of planes, and can make the most efficient selection of aircraft to suit your trip. In addition, his experience in wildlife research flying (and a lifetime of experience in tourism) provides a useful background in advising clients as to when and where to go to see and photograph wildlife, scenery, historical sites, etc.

Craig Thomas and the rest of the Bathurst Arctic Services staff all have northern experience and a working knowledge of canoeing and expediting. Between our staff in Yellowknife and our staff at our various lodges, camps and at Bathurst Inlet, we are all ready to work to ensure that you have the best arctic experience possible!

How Does It Work?

We have negotiated a commission from the air charter companies, hotels, etc. This allows us to function much as a travel agent does, arranging your trip at the same cost to you as if you contacted the companies directly. However, we can also do a lot more.

Over 32 years of operating a naturalist's lodge on the arctic coast, of living in the North, and of operating a canoe outfitting service on many arctic rivers, we have invested in an impressive inventory of camps and gear, maintain a number of land leases, and have developed the skills to deploy these efficiently.

Camp at Pellatt Lake

This means that we can not only arrange your transportation and lodging in Yellowknife, but also can provide a turn-key rental camp with cabins or tentframes for your use, as well as air transport to that camp. We can also provide canoes (or sea-kayaks) and accessories, airport pick-up and drop-off services, vehicle storage, radios, fishing licenses, fuel, bear scare devices, river reports, and anything else you will need for a comfortable and memorable trip. This includes food packages if you want us to make them up. We can even package your trip from Edmonton if you'd like.

In this time of increased travel complications, being able to arrange for most of your needs in advance, by email or telephone, can add immeasurably to your peace of mind regarding your trip.

We know the expense of travel in the northern wilderness, and know how to do it efficiently and safely. In planning your trip, we take advantage of those skills to assist you.

Other Options

These are limited only by your imagination and desires. We can arrange anything: fly-in fishing, hiking, esker-trekking, aurora-viewing, cross-country skiing, flightseeing, caribou-viewing, wildlife photography, and more.

We can provide the use of a wilderness cabin in any season, including winter, with rentals by the day, week, month or year. We can supply you with almost anything you may need, including fishing gear, a boat, snowmobile, or even a dogteam.

You simply cannot do this any more cost-effectively on your own.

Our Camps

Camp on the Burnside River.

Our camps vary in size, from two to six cabins. Your group does not have to crowd into a small cabin. For example, our Tundra Camp/Burnside Lodge near Kathawachaga Lake has five insulated cabins: a kitchen and four sleeping cabins, with beds, not bunks. It's ideal for the do-it-yourselfers who want the comfort of a secure base camp and the total isolation of being by themselves or in a small group. You do your own cooking and guiding and supply your own food. We supply staples and fuel. Canoes and small power boats are available on site. For larger groups, we can even supply a camp manager/cook to assist you. And, as a honeymoon for those who love the wilderness and want a little more comfort then a tent, this is beyond compare!

How to Arrange Your Trip

We can put YOU in this picture, with well-equipped camps and all equipment and support, including regular radio contact, air transportation, and food. We have several camps located in the Barrenlands and boreal forest areas. Any camp can be rented for a period of days or weeks, either as a basic camp (you supply all food), as a camp with non-perishable food supplied (you bring all meat and fresh food), or as a fully-stocked camp.

We will quote you costs on an entire package, air transportation to the site, the camp rental, and extra equipment appropriate to the season such as boats/motors, canoes, radios and other communications equipment, skis or snowshoes, or snowmobiles. We can even supply air transportation from Edmonton and lodging in Yellowknife before and after the trip, as part of the package.

This can be an incomparable experience for a family, small group of friends, or even as a group learning experience. Camps vary in size from two cabins to six cabins, so groups would not have to crowd into a small cabin. As a honeymoon experience for those who love the wilderness and desire a little more comfort than a backpacking tent, it's beyond compare!

Are you inexperienced at camping, but longing for a wilderness experience, and an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to live in comfort in the wilderness? We can provide any amount of instruction or guidance you need, from a one-day seminar before you leave Yellowknife to an Inuit guide/boat operator/instructor at the camp.
